Quick answer
Published 2026 guides from Indian companies put a rule-based bot at ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, an AI chatbot on your own documents at ₹1.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh, a single AI agent at ₹85,000 to ₹4 lakh, and an app built around AI at ₹10 lakh to ₹60 lakh. Model usage, hosting and maintenance are charged on top every month.
Key takeaways
- AI has two costs: the build, and a monthly bill that grows with use.
- Published ranges are wide and mostly come from companies selling this work.
- Most of the money goes on accuracy, integrations and testing, not on the model.
- Model choice can change the monthly bill twentyfold on the same traffic.
- Most businesses do not need a custom-trained model.

Most software gets cheaper to run the moment it’s built. You pay for the website, then a modest hosting bill, and that’s about it.
AI doesn’t work that way. Every question your chatbot answers costs a small amount of money, and the bill grows along with your success. So when someone asks what AI development costs, the honest reply comes in two parts: what it costs to build, and what it costs each month once people use it. Plenty of quotes only mention the first.
How much does AI development cost in India?
Here’s what Indian companies were publishing in 2026. Treat it as a map rather than a price list:
| What you’re building | What it does | Published build cost | Rough timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rule-based bot | Follows a fixed script, with little or no real AI | ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh | Days to weeks |
| AI chatbot on your documents | Answers from your own content, in one language | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh | A few weeks to 3 months |
| One AI agent, one job | Carries out a single multi-step workflow | ₹85,000 to ₹4 lakh | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Several agents or channels | 3 to 5 workflows, or web, WhatsApp and voice together | ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh | 6 to 10 weeks |
| An app built around AI | A full product with accounts, payments and limits | ₹10 lakh to ₹60 lakh | 3 to 9 months |
| Custom-trained models | Your own model, vision systems, on-device AI | ₹60 lakh to ₹1 crore or more | 8 to 14 months |
These are our rounding of guides from Navtechy, Decipher Consultancy, Innovative AI Solutions and eCorpIT. All of them sell this work, and so do we. We couldn’t find an independent rate card for India, and the guides don’t define their tiers in the same way, so one company’s “basic” can be another’s “advanced”.
Why one chatbot costs ₹50,000 and another ₹12 lakh
The first thing to check is whether it’s AI at all. Plenty of cheap “AI chatbots” are decision trees with a new label: press 1 for pricing, press 2 for support. That’s fine for a simple job, but it can’t answer a question nobody scripted.
After that, the money mostly goes to the things a demo doesn’t show. Getting a model to talk takes an afternoon. Getting it to answer correctly from your own messy PDFs, say so when it doesn’t know, and pass an angry customer to a person is where the weeks go. Connecting it to your CRM or WhatsApp adds more, and testing it on your real questions adds more again.
A low quote often skips that testing. You’ll get something that impresses everyone in the meeting, then gives a wrong refund policy to a customer in its first week.
The biggest jump in the table comes from training your own model, and most businesses don’t need to. For answering questions, reading documents and running routine tasks, an existing model from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, or an open one like Llama, will usually do the job. If someone’s proposal starts with a custom model, ask them why.
The monthly bill, with real numbers
AI models charge by the token, which is roughly a piece of a word. Let’s price a support chatbot that handles 1,000 questions a day. Say each one sends about 3,000 tokens to the model, including the question and the passages it looked up, and gets 400 tokens back. Over a month, that’s 90 million tokens in and 12 million out.
| Model tier | Price per million tokens | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-range (Claude Sonnet 5.5) | $2 in, $10 out | About $300, roughly ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 |
| Small and fast (Claude Haiku 5.5) | $0.10 in, $0.50 out | About $15, under ₹2,000 |
Same chatbot, same traffic, and a twentyfold difference. Those are Anthropic’s listed prices on the day we wrote this, and prices in this market move often. Other vendors differ, but the lesson holds: the choice of model can matter more than almost anything else on the bill, and the cheaper one is often good enough for simple questions. Test it on your own data and see.
Agents cost more, because one task can take many model calls. eCorpIT, citing Gartner, reports that agentic systems use 5 to 30 times more tokens per task than a chatbot. A task that’s cheap to run ten times a day can get expensive at ten thousand, so work out the cost per task before you scale up.
Usage isn’t the only monthly line, either:
- Hosting and search storage. Navtechy puts this at ₹1,500 to ₹20,000 a month for a low-traffic support bot.
- Tuning and maintenance. Answers drift as your products and policies change. The same guide estimates ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 a month, and eCorpIT suggests 15 to 25% of the build cost a year.
- Channel fees. WhatsApp conversations and voice minutes are charged separately. Decipher lists WhatsApp at roughly ₹0.35 to ₹1.35 per conversation.
- GST. Check whether it’s in the quote, because two quotes can differ for that reason alone.
How to spend less without ending up with a toy
The best saving comes before any code: pick one job. “We want AI in the business” has no sensible price. “We want it to answer delivery questions from our help pages and hand everything else to Priya” does.
Check whether you need to build at all. If you want a support bot on a common helpdesk, or an assistant for your team’s email, a monthly subscription to an existing product may beat a custom build. Custom makes sense when the AI has to work with your own systems and rules, or when per-seat fees add up. We build this software for a living and we’d still tell you to try the cheap option first.
From there, a few habits keep the bill sensible:
- Run a small pilot on real questions before committing to the full build.
- Send simple requests to a cheaper model, and save the expensive one for hard cases.
- Set usage limits from the first day, so a bug or a bored user can’t run up a surprise bill.
- Keep the model replaceable, so you can move when prices or quality change.
Questions to ask before you sign
A good company will have ready answers to all of these. Pay attention if the answer to the second one is a blank look.
- Is this using a real AI model, and which one?
- What will it cost per month at our expected volume, and who pays the model bill?
- How will you measure accuracy, and on whose data?
- What happens when it doesn’t know the answer?
- Who owns the code, the prompts and the accounts?
- Where does our customers’ data go? If personal data reaches a model provider, you’ll need to think about India’s DPDP Act.
- Can we change the model later without a rebuild?
What it costs with us
A focused first AI project with CodingCafe starts at ₹50,000, and running costs such as model usage are separate. We won’t guess beyond that until we’ve seen the job and the data it would work from, since those decide nearly everything above. Once we have, the scope, price and way of measuring accuracy get agreed in writing.
To get a useful number, write down the one job you’d like AI to do and roughly how many times a day it happens. Send us that using the form below and we’ll reply with a price range within 24 business hours. There’s more on what we build on our AI development page, and if you’re not sure what an agent could do for you, these AI agent examples may help.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI chatbot cost in India?
Published 2026 guides put a rule-based bot at about ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, and an AI chatbot that answers from your own documents at about ₹1.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh. Complex multi-language versions can reach ₹15 lakh.
How much does an AI agent cost in India?
Published guides put a single agent doing one workflow at about ₹85,000 to ₹4 lakh, and a set of three to five workflows at about ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh. Agents usually cost more to run than chatbots, because one task can take many model calls.
What is the monthly cost of running AI?
It depends mostly on volume and the model. A support chatbot handling 1,000 questions a day might spend under ₹2,000 a month on a small model or ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 on a mid-range one, plus hosting, maintenance and channel fees.
Do I need to train my own AI model?
Rarely. For answering questions, reading documents and routine tasks, existing models usually work well. Custom models make sense for specialised jobs where existing ones fall short, and they are the most expensive route.
How long does AI development take?
As a rough guide, a single-workflow agent takes 3 to 4 weeks, a set of agents 6 to 10 weeks, and an app built around AI 3 to 9 months. Messy data and slow feedback add time.
How much does CodingCafe charge for AI development?
A focused first AI project starts at ₹50,000, with running costs such as model usage separate. The final price depends on the job and the data, and is agreed in writing before work starts.
